Mark Raham Q&A Session At VFS Digital Design

Digital Design's Q&A with Vancouver Canucks' Creative Director Mark Raham

Mark Raham has been very generous with his time when it comes to helping VFS Digital Design students understand the importance of bringing a brand to life, and this time was no exception — especially since it was on a game night during a very tense playoff round with the San Jose Sharks when he showed up to our Main Theater for a Questions and Answers session about his role in developing Layered Experiences as Creative Director for the Vancouver Canucks. We were particularly grateful on this evening for his commitment to mentorship , given that he was previewing the 3rd of his preshow projection mapping presentations that night (normally he does three of them over a regular season of about 3 minutes in length, and this was a short season)  — at an extended 6 minutes!

Dark Igloo Selected As Part Of ADC Young Guns X

Dark Igloo YGZ Profile Page

We caught up recently with VFS Digital Design grad, Mark Miller, and got some cool news about his company Dark Igloo (co-founded with Dave Franzese): They were selected as part of this years’ Art Director’s Club Young Guns Class. It’s a select group of 34 people chosen from around the world (30 yrs or younger).

To celebrate, Dark Igloo has put together an online retrospective of their work from the last four years, which you can check out here. They’ve done a lot of great work, and its range is impressive, to say the least. We’ve featured some of that work on OOMPH!, but there is a lot more to see in their portfolio section.

Emily Smith Director of Vancouver Mini Maker Faire

This winter edition of the Digital Design SLAM felt especially fun and challenging. The students were given just five hours to develop a multi-platform campaign and they still managed to present unique and appealing concepts to the client (and Digital Design alumnus), Emily Smith, Director/Founder of the Vancouver Mini Maker Faire (VMMF).

As Emily Smith and I roamed the bustling classrooms, we saw an array of posted sticky notes with busy pencils hitting the paper as everyone brainstormed their ideas. Their brief was to increase an awareness to the Call for Makers in January for VMMF while widening the overall demographic.

On the Wall : November 2012

In the early weeks of each new term, the students in Digital Design are encouraged to submit images from work that they did in the previous term. They are welcome to submit anything from character or logo designs, interface mockups, to even screen captures from their motion design work. The work is then posted online so that all of the Digital Design students can vote on the work, resulting in a “Of The Students, By The Students” selection of winners, who then see their work framed and mounted On The Wall around the campus.
