Dark Igloo Create Video For Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project

Digital Design grad and Dark Igloo co-founder Mark Miller as Carbon Polution

Dark Igloo created another video for Al Gore‘s Climate Reality Project last month called The Price of Carbon, which launched last Wednesday (March 20, 2013). According to Digital Design grad and Dark Igloo co-founder Mark Miller, “It turned out to be pretty stylish.”

Mark and his partner, co-founder Dave Franzese, sent us some great shots, including a couple of great behind the scene moments they captured.

Mark tells us, “We shot The Price of Carbon in a rush, in the midst of another full scale production for m ss ng p eces (who is the executive producer of all our video work & our rep as directors now). Everyone was burning the candle at both ends inside a fire pit. Even the narration by our friend Reggie Watts was recorded cross country at midnight on a Friday night.”

Gnomeland Security — Protecting Against Animal Terrorism

USA Gnomeland Security Badge

Dark Igloo (co-founded by Digital Design grad Mark Miller and his business partner Dave Franzese) along with a small group of their friends — {group theory} (production co.: Sagmeister’s The Happy Film, Moving Windmills) and Shift Editorial (animation director: David Bowie’s “Jeans and a T-shirt”; documentary on the band GenesisCome Rain or Shine) — have  made a 16 minute cartoon called Gnomeland Security.

As Mark tells us, “Gnomeland Security is the adventures of five idiotic gnomes struggling to protect our nation from the animal kingdom’s foulest terrorists. From the perspective of most Americans, animal terrorism looks a lot like “natural occurrences,” which is why you’ve had no idea that this secret task force of mercenary delinquents has been keeping your ass safe … until now!”

Dark Igloo YGZ Profile Page

We caught up recently with VFS Digital Design grad, Mark Miller, and got some cool news about his company Dark Igloo (co-founded with Dave Franzese): They were selected as part of this years’ Art Director’s Club Young Guns Class. It’s a select group of 34 people chosen from around the world (30 yrs or younger).

To celebrate, Dark Igloo has put together an online retrospective of their work from the last four years, which you can check out here. They’ve done a lot of great work, and its range is impressive, to say the least. We’ve featured some of that work on OOMPH!, but there is a lot more to see in their portfolio section.

Digital Design Talks: Audience

The theme of our recent Digital Design Talks was Audience — an understanding that, as designers, we are advocates for the end user. The student team of Estefania (‘Fanny’) Acuna, Hasan Habib, Sadaf Rouhani Haji Agha and Marlon Soriano presented their recent campaign for Hope In Shadows, a charitable organization creating positive social change for people and communities impacted by poverty and marginalization in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and beyond. They inspired us with their solution that included an easy-to-edit WordPress site and an emotionally moving video to promote the Hope in Shadows photography contest and associated calendar sales program.

Dark Igloo : Branding the World

Some of Dark Igloo's recent work Pepsi. Doritos. Target. MTV. They’re some of the world’s biggest brands, and in recent months, they’ve all turned to VFS grad Mark Miller‘s Dark Igloo.

Since graduating from the one-year Digital Design program in 2005 — as part of its very first graduating class, in fact — Mark hasn’t had much in the way of downtime. He headed straight to New York and signed on with Firstborn Multimedia, where he spent a year creating Flash interfaces. From there, thehappycorp global.

Now, with momentum on his side, he’s slingshotted into a new challenge altogether — running the Brooklyn-based Dark Igloo with co-founder Dave Franzese. And in less than a year, they’ve worked with an all-star roster of clients. All the while, Mark’s somehow managed to continue his daily design exercise, stretch daily.

We’ve written about Mark before – notably to touch base on his work with thehappycorp. But we were craving an update on his new projects, and caught up with Mark to talk Dark Igloo, the bliss of MTV-fed nostalgia, and what the future holds for this designer on the rise.
