Have you ever thrown a party and had that feeling, “what if no one shows up?” Well, on June 25th of this year, I took on that feeling in a big way, by hosting a new event in the city, known as Vancouver Mini Maker Faire. A big part of hosting this sort of event and filling a room — along the list with project management and lots of meetings — is having an effective promotional strategy, paired with great design. Design that makes sense.

On Thursday, August 25th, 2011 the local chapter of The Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC) hosted the 5th annual Associations Summer BBQ. Creative professionals from associations such as GDC, CAPIC, BCID, SIGGRAPH, TAAC, IXDA, and SEGD got together at Trout Lake on a gorgeous summer evening to enjoy hot dogs, hamburgers and a few games of bocce and croquet!
As usual, this was FREE for all to enjoy, and numerous VFS students and alumni were among the nearly 100 people, including kids and dogs, who showed up to network, swap industry stories and otherwise just have a great time in the sun together.

For the first time ever, SIGGRAPH was held outside of the US and, lucky for us here at VFS, it was in our home town. For me as a SIGGRAPH frequenter, presenting at various booths for MAXON Computer Inc. since 2003, it was an interesting experience to go under the VFS banner this time and focus more on panels and talks and a little less on presenting. Unfortunately, I was so busy at the convention that I had no time to summarize the experience in daily posts, so here is a synopsis of the week as I saw it.
And it isn’t over yet. Boca sent a dispatch to the DD Blog tonight from San Diego, where he’s working for Adobe – along with some of his fellow finalists – at the Guerilla Studio at SIGGRAPH! The Guerilla Studio team had to pull together 12 posters in 36 hours, and Boca shares the results with us all over on the DD Blog.
