‘Professor Gianotten & Dr. Caslon in a Comic Tragedy’ by Robert Soo

Created by Vancouver Film School student Robert Soo as his graduate project for the Digital Design program. This published book falls into the rather unique genre of being an illustrated, typographic, Victorian mystery, alphabet book. The characters that populate the story are all based on different fonts who reflect their particular typeface’s unique personality, and each starting with a different letter of the alphabet. Each character also speaks in their own font, reinforcing their particular personality.

The first of the characters came to life in a typography lesson early in the program when Robert and his classmates were asked to create a character using a single glyph from a specific typeface. In the following term Robert took this character, gave him a companion and developed a one page comic strip around their first adventure. This then evolved into the personal challenge of creating a full alphabet worth of characters and a story and world in which they could all reside. The results are entertaining, whimsical, and beautifully illustrated.

Alphabet on Ice – Kim Oxlund

Alphabet On Ice

Alphabet on Ice is Digital Design graduate Kim Oxlund‘s term 2 Typography project. The course asked students to select a typeface, research it, then create and present a specimen (a work that shows the range of the type in use). Kim Oxlund took the assignment to a new level by selecting a typeface that can only be found in an alphabetic ice-cube tray. Using time-lapse photography and custom lighting he filmed the ice melting. He then reversed the footage and added a playful original score to create a unique exploration of type.

On the Wall – Oct 2011

In the early weeks of each new term, the students in Digital Design are encouraged to submit images from work that they did in the previous term. They are welcome to submit anything from character or logo designs, interface mockups, or even screen captures from their motion design work. The work is then posted online so that all of the Digital Design students can vote on the work resulting in a ‘of the students, by the students’ selection of winners who see their work framed and mounted ‘On The Wall’ in the campus.

Design Inspiration – Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto

From the first moment I saw a sample of the artwork for Coldplay’s forthcoming album Mylo Xyloto (pronounced my-lo zy-letoe) I fell in love. The video for ‘Every Teardrop is a Waterfall’ their first single from the album (embedded below for your convenience) playfully uses stop motion to create a motion graphics feel using the same colours and street art style as the album cover.

What I love the most is that they took the playful nature of the artwork and integrated it into what appears to be quite the package design. Earlier this week they announced a special limited edition pop-up album available exclusively at Coldplay.com. It includes:
