Created by Vancouver Film School student Robert Soo as his graduate project for the Digital Design program. This published book falls into the rather unique genre of being an illustrated, typographic, Victorian mystery, alphabet book. The characters that populate the story are all based on different fonts who reflect their particular typeface’s unique personality, and each starting with a different letter of the alphabet. Each character also speaks in their own font, reinforcing their particular personality.
The first of the characters came to life in a typography lesson early in the program when Robert and his classmates were asked to create a character using a single glyph from a specific typeface. In the following term Robert took this character, gave him a companion and developed a one page comic strip around their first adventure. This then evolved into the personal challenge of creating a full alphabet worth of characters and a story and world in which they could all reside. The results are entertaining, whimsical, and beautifully illustrated.
